V5.77 combines six dedicated motor-signal groups with six configurable Extra I/O signals that can become two additional Step / Direction / Enable groups. Add a compatible plug-in ESP32-S3 module, choose the external drivers required by the machine, then configure the controller through FluidNC's Wi-Fi WebUI and readable YAML file.

Understanding the 6 + 2 Axis Design

V5.77 has six dedicated external-driver connectors plus six Extra I/O signals. Those six extra signals can be arranged as two additional Step / Direction / Enable groups, or they can remain ordinary configured outputs.

One configuration at a time: the Extra I/O signals can be two additional motor groups or ordinary outputs. The same six signals cannot perform both roles simultaneously. Axis letters, ganged motors and output functions are defined by the active firmware configuration.

FluidNC Ready — The Main Firmware

FluidNC is the primary workflow for V5.77. It turns the plug-in ESP32-S3 module into a network-connected motion controller and keeps the machine definition in a text-based YAML file. Start with PiBot's supplied V5.77 bench-test YAML, verify the board from top to bottom with the Wiki, then create a separate machine-specific YAML for the final mechanics and wiring.

Ten machine inputsTen 3-pin input headers can be assigned to limits, probe, tool setter, controls and other functions. The switch-supply jumper selects 5 V by default or main VIN when required by documented sensors.
GPIO38 / GPIO48 selectionDifferent ESP32-S3 module revisions use GPIO38 or GPIO48 for the module LED. The board jumper selects the available signal; the PiBot test YAML uses GPIO38 as an input by default.
Visible diagnosticsInput, motor-signal, PWM, MOSFET, RS485 and power LEDs support guided checks before connecting the final machine loads.

External Motor Drivers & Logic Selection

V5.77 is designed for external motor drivers and has no on-board StepStick sockets. Six PH2.0 groups carry Enable, Step, Direction and Ground. The I2SO logic-voltage jumper is set to 5 V by default and can be moved to 3.3 V only when required by a compatible driver interface.

Do not connect motors directly to the carrier. The PH2.0 connectors carry control signals for external drivers, not motor winding current.

Spindle, Laser and Auxiliary Control

Four 5 V PWM / digital signalsGPIO4, GPIO5, GPIO45 and GPIO46 provide configurable 5 V signal paths for supported PWM, laser and digital-output uses.
Adjustable 0–10 VGPIO6 drives the analog speed command, with GPIO7 and GPIO8 available for configured Forward/Reverse control.
Standard RS485On-board RS485 supports configured Modbus RTU equipment such as compatible VFDs. V5.77 RS485 is standard and non-isolated.
Two MOSFET channelsGPIO4 and GPIO5 also control matching low-side MOSFET outputs. The test YAML uses M7 and M8 for a simple bench check.
MOSFET limit: 1.5 A maximum per channel Use these outputs only for suitable light DC loads. A pump, solenoid, larger fan or other heavier/inductive load should be switched through an external relay, SSR or suitable power driver. Overloading a channel can burn the MOSFET.

Display, Pendant and Expansion

V5.77 provides independent connectors for an I2C OLED and the RJ12 pendant/I/O-expander interface, so both can be configured at the same time. The current PiBot pendant can communicate through its Wi-Fi or built-in Bluetooth workflow; a compatible wired RJ12 connection remains available when required.

Before First Power-On

  • Use 12–24 V DC only and verify VIN/GND polarity before applying main power. Main power is required for a complete carrier-board test.
  • Install or remove the ESP32-S3 module, jumpers, OLED, RJ12 accessories and driver wiring only while power is off.
  • Keep the default 5 V I2SO logic setting unless the connected external driver specifically requires 3.3 V.
  • Test motor signals before connecting motors, and verify PWM/laser/0–10 V/RS485 before connecting the final spindle, VFD or laser load.
  • MOSFET limit: 1.5 A maximum per channel. Use an external relay, SSR or suitable power driver for heavier loads.
  • The supplied XYZABC YAML is a bench-test profile, not a finished machine configuration. Create a separate machine YAML before homing, cutting or engraving.

Does it work with LightBurn?LightBurn officially lists FluidNC and grblHAL among its supported GCode controller firmware. Correct laser-output configuration and machine safety checks are still required.
Is the supplied YAML ready for cutting?No. It is a board-level test file designed to exercise the V5.77 interfaces. Copy it and create a machine-specific configuration for the actual motors, limits, travel, spindle/laser and safety hardware.
