Hear the machine.
Not the motors.
A serious external TMC5160 driver for builders who want quiet low-speed motion without giving up torque. Keep your current controller, connect standard EN / STEP / DIR, and let StealthChop take the harsh whine out of the shop.
Choose the sound your machine makes
One driver gives you two very different personalities. Select it on the DIP switch in standalone mode, or tune it from software over SPI.
StealthChop
Near-silent low-speed motion for engravers, desktop routers and machines that share your working space. Less audible switching noise and less vibration transmitted into the frame.
SpreadCycle
Predictable current control and stronger torque headroom when speed and load matter more than absolute silence. Switch modes without replacing the driver.
Real 256-step silicon
The TMC5160 internally interpolates motion for smoother rotation. Over SPI, the controller can use the full microstep range and tune each axis from the machine configuration.
What arrives for each motor axis
The standard package contains the driver and its connection accessories. The SPI adapter is a separate optional module.
No heatsink is included because TMC5160 V5 does not require one in normal use.
If it outputs STEP / DIR, it can drive V5
Standalone mode only needs EN, STEP, DIR and GND. That is the same interface used by TB6600, DM542, GRBL boards, motion breakouts and many PLCs.
Logic level is selectable: move the jumper to match 3.3 V or 5 V control signals. SPI is optional and requires a controller with TMC5160 SPI support.
Standard mode shown on PiBot V5.88 Ultra. The same four-wire control principle applies to other step / direction controllers.
Wire it simply. Or tune every axis in software.
DIP switches do the setup
No driver library, no SPI cable, no config syntax. Set current, microsteps, StealthChop / SpreadCycle and hold-current reduction directly on the board.
The machine config does the setup
Set current, microsteps, chopper mode and StallGuard per axis from FluidNC or grblHAL. V5.88 Ultra and V4.96 Pro support both daisy-chain and independent SPI layouts.
Every connector and selector is documented
The board accepts a 24 V motor supply, two motor coils, standalone or SPI control, selectable logic voltage, ABN encoder feedback and DIAG0 / DIAG1 outputs.
Set the motor current on the 8-position switch
In standalone mode, use the PinMap to find M3, M4 and M5, then match their Up / Down positions here. Values use the TMC5160 current formula with this board's 0.1 Ω sense resistors and are checked against the chip datasheet.
| M3 | M4 | M5 | RMS / COIL | PEAK |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Down | Up | Down | 1.22 A | 1.73 A |
| Down | Up | Up | 1.36 A | 1.93 A |
| Down | Down | Down | 1.51 A — default | 2.13 A |
| Down | Down | Up | 1.65 A | 2.34 A |
| Up | Up | Down | 1.80 A | 2.54 A |
| Up | Up | Up | 1.94 A | 2.74 A |
| Up | Down | Down | 2.08 A | 2.95 A |
| Up | Down | Up | 2.30 A | 3.25 A |
| M1 | M2 | Microsteps |
|---|---|---|
| Down | Down | 8 — default |
| Down | Up | 16 |
| Up | Down | 32 |
| Up | Up | 64 |
Standalone mode only. Full 1/128 and 1/256 settings require SPI. Change switches only with power off.
The default current setting is M3 Down, M4 Down, M5 Down. Match the setting to the motor's rated phase current, not merely its frame size.
The lowest standalone setting is still 1.22 A RMS. Motors rated below roughly 1.2 A per phase can overheat even at minimum. SPI mode allows finer current control.
Two changes that matter in the cabinet
ABN encoder and DIAG outputs already existed on V4; they are retained, not presented as new features.
| Driver IC | TMC5160A-TA |
| Motor supply | 24 V DC only |
| Logic level | 3.3 V / 5 V selectable |
| Control | EN / STEP / DIR, optional SPI |
| Current | 1.22–2.30 A RMS by DIP; up to 3.3 A peak |
| Microsteps | 8 / 16 / 32 / 64 standalone; up to 1/256 over SPI |
| Feedback | ABN encoder, DIAG0 / DIAG1 |
| Board size | 56 × 42 mm |
Wiring, DIP tables and complete configs are already published
The manual covers standalone and SPI setup, current calculations, encoder / DIAG headers, $MI communication checks and complete four-motor examples.
Before you add it to the machine
Will it replace my TB6600 or DM542?
Usually yes at the signal level: both use enable, step, direction and ground. Confirm that your motor is suitable for the V5 current range and that your machine uses a 24 V supply.
Do I need SPI?
No. Standalone mode is complete and needs no software support. SPI is for builders who want current, microsteps and diagnostics controlled from the machine config.
Can I use 36 V or 48 V?
No. This V5 board is specified for 24 V DC only; its reverse-polarity and surge protection are designed around that supply.
Keep the controller you trust. Upgrade the motion you hear.
Choose the quantity for your number of motors, match the current to the motor label, and use the published manual if your machine has an unusual wiring layout.
